World Class Halibut & Salmon Fishing in Homer Alaska since 1974 1-800-478-8792
Silver Fox Charters is located in breathtaking Homer, Alaska and has been serving anglers since 1974. We are one of Alaska's most established charter businesses and our customers have landed more 100lb+ halibut than any other charter company in Homer. Whether you are looking for a full day long range trip or half day trip with the wife and kids, no one works harder to provide you with a quality experience and a mess of fish. Although halibut is our main stay, we also offer trips that will target other species along with halibut. Long range halibut trips can be arranged that also target rockfish or we can combine halibut trips with an Alaskan salmon fishing experience.
Full Day Trips
Our halibut season starts May 1st and continues until late September. A typical full day trip is 8-10 hours long, depending on tides, weather, and of course fishing. These trips have been the status quo for nearly 30 years now. You may travel up to2-3 hrs. to reach the fishing grounds or be as close as 45 minutes from the dock and fish in depths ranging from 20ft to over 300ft, depending on where the fish have been. For our full day trips, you'll want to bring a lunch, snacks, drinks and your camera as these trips take us to some of the most beautiful fishing spots in Alaska. As with all fishing there are no guarantees but these trips will offer you the best shot at one of those monster halibut you have heard so much about.
Half Day Trips
Now the most popular trip in Homer, we debated a long time about how to offer these trips while maintaining a quality fishing experience. There were two things that we needed to overcome for us to offer these trips. First thing was the idea of running out catching 2 little fish per person, if lucky and coming back to the dock, second was putting 25-30 people on the boat. Overcrowding and tangles is not our idea of quality. Our solution was to begin offering half day trips on our 6 passenger boats, no overcrowding and more quality time to try for some of those nicer fish. Expect a 5 hr. trip, give or take a few minutes, with an average run time to the fishing grounds of under an hour. We run these trips around the tides, trying to make sure we are there for the prime fishing time, so departure and return times will vary.
We also offer salmon fishing trips either on their own or combined with a halibut fishing trip. The salmon fishing has two major runs, the first is the mighty King Salmon or Chinook. Ranging from 10 to 50+ lbs. this run is best from mid-May thru the end of June. The second run is the Silver Salmon or Coho that starts late July and goes thru September. During this run you also have the opportunity of catching feeder or local King Salmon, making this a very exciting time of the season for salmon fishing. Most of our salmon fishing is done by trolling with downriggers, although sometimes we drift with weighted hearing(mooching). Salmon fishing may be in the middle of Cook Inlet or right of the end of the Homer Spit depending on the run at any particular time.
